David was the first person we met when we moved to Fareham in 1981, arriving out-of-the-blue on our doorstep with a teapot and two mugs - and an invitation for something stronger later. In the darkness he couldn't see me properly, though i could see him and, as he introduced himself as as one of our new neighbours, he nearly dropped the tray when I greeted him as a term-mate and friend from Dartmouth. Our families became and have remained good friends - his kindness and generosity were well-know - Lucy particularly remembers his calm and reassuring drive to hospital at 0600 when she was in labour with our first child.
